A Graduate Geotechnical/Geoenvironmental Engineer is required to join the geotechnical engineering division operating from the company’s Norwich office, to work on a range of site investigation projects across East Anglia, the south of England and further afield.

Candidates as a minimum should have a degree in a relevant subject, a full UK driving license, excellent communications skills (both written and verbal) and a keen interest in learning new skills.

The role will involve a mixture of site and office based work, predominantly based around the specification, operation, management and interpretation of geotechnical and geoenvironmental investigation. Graduate Engineers will be trained to undertake field tasks such as machine trial pit excavations, supervising borehole drilling, undertaking infiltration testing, ground gas monitoring, groundwater sampling and researching geological, hydrogeological, historical, topographical and environmental site information. You will also learn how geotechnical engineers provide foundation recommendations, advice on ground conditions, soil infiltration, undertaking phase one and two contamination assessments.

We are pleased to be able to offer the opportunity for an internship in our geotechnical department in Norwich.

Candidates would be based in our Norwich office for up to one year (the commencement and duration can be flexible to suit your needs), to work on a range of site investigation projects across East Anglia and further afield. The role would be supervised by experienced engineers and include full training in all aspects you may be involved in.

The type of work would generally be a combination of geotechnical investigation and contaminated land assessment. In previous years students have enjoyed involvement in a mixture of site and office based work, including field tasks such as machine trial pit excavations, borehole drilling, infiltration testing, ground gas monitoring, groundwater sampling and undertaking research for geological, hydrogeological, historical and topographical site information. You will also learn how engineers provide advice on ground conditions, foundation recommendations, soil infiltration, undertaking phase one and two contamination assessments and validating remediation projects.

To be considered for the role of assistant geotechnical/geoenvironmental engineer candidates should be part way through an undergraduate or graduate degree (e.g. Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Science or a related degree), have a full UK driving licence, excellent communications skills (both written and verbal) and a keen interest in learning new skills.

Candidates as a minimum should have a degree in a relevant subject, at least five years’ demonstrable experience in geotechnical site investigation and contaminated land assessments, managing engineers and field technicians, have a full UK driving license, excellent communications skills (both written and verbal) and a keen interest in learning new skills.
The role will involve a mixture of site and office based work, predominantly based around the specification, operation, management and interpretation of geotechnical and geoenvironmental investigations. The Cambridge and Norwich geotechnical departments are led by the principal engineer, with senior engineers each responsible for helping and supervising a small team of engineers/graduates/assistants in their work.
Knowledge and experience should include soil mechanics, confidence in providing foundation recommendations, soil/groundwater/ground gas risk assessments, supervising/undertaking trial pits, boreholes and other field techniques, and experience as a line manager.

Geotechnical Data Technician (part time)

A data management technician is required to join the geotechnical department in Norwich, to assist with ground investigation record and drawing production.
Candidates should as a minimum be proficient with standard computer software, with a good knowledge of programmes including excel, word and ideally autoCAD; GCSE grade C or above in subjects including Maths and English; excellent communications skills (both written and verbal) and a keen interest in learning new skills.
The role will involve assisting a team of geotechnical engineers to create borehole, trial pit and other fieldwork and monitoring records, using excel add-ins to Keynetix Holebase SI software. The role also includes producing drawings and plans using Holebase SI software and exporting to produce detailed plans in autoCAD.
Demonstrating an attention to detail and a keen interest to learn new skills is essential. Prior knowledge of geotechnical investigation, geology and the environment is desirable, but not essential. However, an interest would help to comprehend the background to the records and drawings.
The part-time role can be flexible with regard to the days at work, but a three day working week is preferred. Training will be provided for Keynetix software, and for other areas (e.g. autoCAD) where appropriate.

A Geotechnical Site Technician/Trainee is required to join the Testing Services department in Norwich, to work on a range of site investigation projects across East Anglia and further afield. Candidates as a minimum should have a full UK Driving Licence (over 20 years old for driving insurance purposes) and possess numeracy and literacy skills to GCSE level ‘C’ or equivalent. The duties and responsibilities cover:
SITE WORK: Working on site assisting with the drilling of boreholes to determine ground conditions, the obtaining of representative soil samples and the undertaking of in-situ testing. Work also will involve sample handling storage and disposal, breaking out ground, hand digging inspection pits and undertaking in-situ testing.

Geotechnical Site Technician/Lead Driller is required to join the testing services department in Norwich, to work on a range of site investigation projects across East Anglia and further afield. Candidates as a minimum should have numeracy and literacy to GCSE level C or equivalent, experience as a Lead Driller operating a dynamic continuous sampling/window sampling rig and at least two years of site investigation experience. The duties and responsibilities cover:
SITE WORK: Working on site collecting samples and testing ground conditions to allow our engineers to compile reports for clients. Involved with sample handling storage and disposal, specialist ground drilling, breaking out ground and digging hand dug excavations and undertaking in-situ testing, including:

  • Window Sampling
  • Dynamic Probing
  • Plate Bearing Tests
  • California Bearing Ratio tests (CBRs)
  • Sand Replacement Tests
  • Density Tests
  • TRL Probe testing
  • Shear Vane Tests
